Towns County Students Participate in Georgia National Fair

Towns Co. Middle and High School students participated in the Youth Art Competition and Exhibition at the Georgia National Fair held in Perry, Georgia in October, 2009.  Students in the 7th grade through 12th grade in public and private schools in Georgia were eligible to enter.  This year over 90 middle and high schools across the state competed.  This was the second year for Towns County students to participate in the state-wide competition.  The students’ artworks were entered into the color photography and other visual communication categories.

In the Towns Co. Middle School technology classes last year, 7th and 8th grade students used Microsoft Word and the drawing toolbar to create geometric patterned artwork.  Their inspiration came from Charley Harper, who is best known for his highly stylized wildlife illustrations.  The following students are now in high school and competed in the high school visual communications category:  Rebecca Duckworth, Mackenzie Mirandi, Lauren McCarter, Autumn Ledford, Kale Evans, Kayleigh Castonguay, and Erin Westberry.  Mackenzie Mirandi won 3rd place ($15) for Crawdad.  TCMS students that were in 7th grade last year and now competing as 8th graders in the visual communications category:  Mckenzie Moss, Elizabeth Turner, Andrea Coleman, Allison Page, Danielle Nguyen, and Courtney Marshall.  Danielle Nguyen won 1st place ($25) for Beagle; Elizabeth Turner won 2nd place ($20) for Foxy; Mckenzie Moss won 3rd place ($15) for Lady Bug Beetle; and Courtney Marshall won Honorable Mention ($5) for Possum with her Babies.

Photography is becoming a growing hobby for many and is now part of the Digital Media Connection class at Towns County Middle School.  Bailey Tyler, a 7th grader, won 1st place ($25) for Mixed Greens and Honorable Mention ($5) for Glorious Sky.

TCHS students, Kyle Arrowood, Brittany Boyer, and Olivia Hardin competed in the color photography category.  Kyle Arrowood won 2nd place ($20) for Tangled Hoses.  Brittany Boyer won 3rd place ($15) for Reflecting Water and Honorable Mention ($5) for Thorns.

The artwork is now being displayed in the Towns County Elementary School library.  Melissa Brumbaugh, TCMS technology teacher, guided the students through the learning process, collected, and prepared the artwork for the state-wide competition.
