It has been a wonderful summer at the library as 263 children enjoyed stories and crafts related to the “Make a Splash..READ!” theme. With the warm temperatures outside, the water theme was a welcome one. The children received prizes each week by “picking up ducks” from a pool of water. We also had 44 children to sign up for the Vacation Reading Program. These children kept track of the books they read all summer and received a certificate for their reading efforts. Thank you to our 2010 sponsors: Zaxby’s , United Community Bank, Bank of Hiawassee, State Farm Insurance, Noblet’s 5 & 10, Stephens Federal Bank, and Papa’s Pizza. A Fall & Winter storytime will be offered at Towns County Public Library starting in September. Please call 706-896-6169 the last week in August for day and time.

Week 6

In addition to reading about splashing in the lake and making fish bowls, this

week we had a special treat! Dr. Brian Kinsey (Mountain Mobile Veterinary Clinic) came to the library and spoke with the children about animals and gave them a guided tour of his mobile vet clinic. Thanks Dr. Kinsey!!

Week 8

Cheryl Barrett with United Community Bank handed out ice cream to all the children (Pictured with Cheryl: Zoe Phillips, Evan Phillips, and Eli Phillips). Pizza was provided by Papa’s Pizza. Thank you UCB and Papa’s Pizza! After eating, the children played water-themed games, received prizes, certificates, face painting, and balloon animals, and enjoyed playing on the playground.
Week 1

Storytime began on Thursday, June 3, 2010 with a visit to the ocean. Sandy Wood read books to the children about the ocean and they learned interesting facts about the ocean as well. They made decorative sand art bottles during craft time.

Week 2

This week was all about water safety. Along with stories about frogs and their life cycle, the children received handouts provided by the Coast Guard Auxiliary about swimming safety. A demonstration was also given on the proper selection and use of life jackets. Craft time consisted of making froggy door hangers.

Week 3

Splish splashing in the bathtub was the theme this week. The children listened attentively to Mrs. Sandy as she read bath time stories. Craft time found the children making plastic sail boats to play with in the bathtub.

Week 4

The format was a little different this week as Entertainer Carey Huddlestun presented a program entitled “Treasure Hunt: Searching for Hidden Treasure at your Library”. He did a great job and the children as well as the adults enjoyed the show.

Week 5-8 coming next week!!

The family of Leo D. Hesson, ( Joy Hessson, Judy Magowan and Jacquie Faucett ) honors “Our Old Soldier” as he celebrated 90 ” Big Ones” at the Young Harris City Hall Banquet Room, August 22, 2010. Music was provided by Marissa Smith and Alexa Magowan. Banquet Room and tables were decorated by his granddaughter, Suzannah Smith of Lawrenceville, Ga.

The Hessons, Leo and Norma, retired out of the Atlanta area in 1988, to Towns County, Hiawassee- Young Harris. Our mother, Pappa’s sweetheart of 66 years went to be the Lord on February 16, 2007. They have three daughters, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Mr. Hesson served 26 1/2 years in the US Army. His service was in the China Burma India Theater of Operations. After WWII he served in the Occupation Forces of Germany. Upon retirement , he was employed by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service ( AAFES). His last assignment prior to this retirement was Chief of Engineering Branch at the AAFES Distribution Center at Ft. Gillem in Forest Park, Ga.

While serving in Germany, he and his family traveled extensively, having visited nine countries throughout Europe.

They have been active in community affairs since retiring to this area. Mr. Hesson was instrumental in helping to build a new church building: Hiawassee Church of Christ on Highway 288. He served as secretary/treasurer for fifteen years and is presently serving as the associate minister.

He was also instrumental in working with the Governor’s office, local and state officials and the Hiawassee Garden Club- in the upgrading and improvement of the highway area adjacent to the “Welcome to Georgia” and the frontage area of Laurel Hills Cemetery.

Our father received the Army Commendation Medal and numerous military decorations and superior accomplishments awards during his military and civilian careers. He and a minister friend co-authored the book ” The Greatness and Glory of God”.

Our parents made countless friends throughout Towns Count and have expressed to us thatchy definitely made the right decision in choosing this area as their retirement home.

We wish, on their behalf, to extend our appreciation and thanks to the officials, residents and friends of Towns County, for the services, kindness and love demonstrated to them in this , “your beautiful valley.”

Daughters: Joy Hesson, Judy Magowan and Jacquie Faucett.
